The Bible is the primary means that God uses to teach believers. The more that they learn what the Bible says and what it means, then the more that the Holy Spirit will use those truths to transform their life. John 17:17 expresses it this way, “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.”
What this verse says is that God’s truth is what He uses to actually change a person. It is what God uses to teach us and to transform our life into becoming more and more like His Son. When we read it, the Holy Spirit begins to teach us truth that we never knew or understood before, and over a period of time that truth is embraced in our life and by applying it to our life, we begin to be changed.
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Romans 12:2
Reading the Bible is a very important part of how a Christian grows spiritually. It would be similar to how a newborn baby grows. They are fed milk, and as they grow, they begin to eat more solid foods, and then by the time that they become a young person they can eat anything. However, if they never eat, they will never grow. The same is true of Christians, the more time that the believer spends in God’s Word, the more they will grow spiritually. “Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow…” (1 Peter 2:2)
Jesus told His disciples that the words that He was speaking to them were“spirit and life.” That phrase means is that His Words were spiritual words that were life giving and life transforming.
