Respect for authority does not always come easily to us. Do you sometimes find it difficult to respect those who have a measure of authority over you? If so, you are not alone in this struggle. We live at a time when respect for authority seems to be at an all-time low. Yet, the Bible says that we need to show respect for those who hold positions of authority over us.
In Proverbs 24:21 KJV
My son, fear thou the Lord and the king: and meddle not with them that are given to change:
In fact, doing so is essential if we want to remain in God’s love. Naturally, then, some questions arise. Why can it be so difficult for us to respect authority? and in what ways can we show respect for authority?
QUESTION
1:Why can it be so difficult for us to respect authority?
:Because of our sinful nature, pride and haughtiness arise easily in most of us, whereas humility is a rare quality that we need to work hard to cultivate and maintain. Even after years of faithful service to God, we may give in to stubbornness and pride. For example, consider Korah, who faithfully stuck with God's people through many hardships. Still, he craved more authority and brazenly led a rebellion against Moses, the meekest man alive at that time.
In Numbers 16:1-3 KJV
Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men: And they rose up before Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty princes of the assembly, famous in the congregation, men of renown: And they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them, Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the Lord is among them: wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the congregation of the Lord ?
Think, too, of King Uzziah, whose pride led him to enter God's temple and carry out a sacred duty reserved for the priests.
(Read 2 Chronicles 26:16-21)
Such men paid dearly for their rebellion. Yet, their negative examples are useful reminders for all of us. We need to combat the pride that makes it difficult for us to respect authority.
2:in what ways can we show respect for authority?
The best motivations to regard authority spring from love—our love for God, for our kindred man, and notwithstanding for ourselves. Since we adore God to the exclusion of everything else, we need to make his heart rejoice. (Read Proverbs 27:11; Mark 12:29, 30.) We realize that his power, his entitlement to manage the universe, has been tested on earth as far back as the disobedience in Eden and that the dominant part of humankind have favored Satan and rejected God's run the show. We are excited to take the contrary stand. When we read the glorious words of Revelation 4:11, they hit home in our heart. That it is so evident to us that God is the legitimate Ruler of the universe! We grasp God's power, tolerating his administer in our everyday life.
Such regard implies compliance and the sky is the limit from there. We obey God promptly in light of the fact that we cherish him. Nonetheless, there will undoubtedly be times when dutifulness will be extremely troublesome for us, should learn accommodation. We review that Jesus submitted to his Father's will notwithstanding while doing so could appear to be extremely testing. "Let, not my will, but rather yours happen," he said to his Father.
Luke 22:42 KJV
Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.
